Serving Ice Cream

We’re going to be a bit different and it’s probably going to offend some people. But before I get to that let me describe the issue:

In most places you see the ice cream you are going to buy. Chocolates are brown, strawberry is bright red, bubble gum is bright blue, pistachio is bright green.

Home made ice cream looks boring. We do not use artificial colours. Our ice creams are not going to visually impress you. Sure we’re going to have lots of cookies, marshmallows, chocolate bits, fresh strawberries, skor bars and so on, but without artificial colours it’s not going to jump out at you.

What’s more, the visual display cabinets are pretty tough on the quality of the product. Air is terrible for ice cream. It leads to ice crystals and a poor experience. Instead we’re using a higher quality, well insulated cooler that maintains its temperature well and limits this product degradation. We’re going to rely on our website with pictures and product descriptions to show and describe what our available flavours will be.

We’re also going to be making ice cream in smaller batches and storing it in smaller containers. That way, the ice cream containers are not sticking around in the freezer for weeks on end and you’re always going to get a fresh batch.

Back to unfortunately offending people. We won’t be offering free samples. This is for a couple of reasons:

  • We’re a small shop with limited space. Our goal is to help serve people quickly and let them enjoy our products and help the next people in line. We don’t want you to have to wait in line and want to make the experience easy to get in and out.
  • Opening and closing the cooler to try several flavours at the same time has that same impact on product quality with the products being exposed to air more than necessary.

That’s not to say we won’t be standing by our products. If you are not happy with our products then return it and you’ll get your money back. Naturally there will be some challenges with this approach and hopefully the policy isn’t abused.

We’re going to offer Ice Cream Flights which will let you sample several flavours at the same time.

Please let us know what you think.
